{"id":966,"date":"2019-08-02T14:41:52","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T12:41:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/?p=966"},"modified":"2025-05-21T09:27:43","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T07:27:43","slug":"6-important-parameters-for-the-design-in-of-lithium-polymer-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/en\/6-important-parameters-for-the-design-in-of-lithium-polymer-batteries\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Important Parameters for the Design-In of Lithium Polymer Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A standardized battery fits\ninto any compatible compartment &#8211; after all, that\u2019s why standards are defined.\nDepending on the application, however, button cells and cylindrical batteries\nreach their limits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Smartwatch, for example, has\na significantly higher energy consumption than an ordinary wristwatch. A simple\nbutton cell is therefore far from sufficient to cover the device&#8217;s power\nrequirements. However, the case of the watch is far too small for a powerful\nlithium-ion battery. Only a lithium polymer battery is capable of meeting the\nspecific requirements of a Smartwatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flexible product design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/products\/battery_technology\/getPrm\/batteries\/Lithium%20Polymer%20Batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lithium polymer technology<\/a> is a match to lithium ion batteries in terms of performance, but is much more flexible in terms of design and size. The reason for this is the absence of a solid metal housing, as is common with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/products\/battery_technology\/getPrm\/batteries\/Lithium%20Ion%20Batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lithium-ion batteries<\/a>. Instead, the cells are merely enclosed by a thin layer of plastic-laminated aluminum foil. Thanks to the sandwich-like structure of the battery cells, even curved or ultra-flat designs with a thickness of less than one millimeter are conceivable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For product developers and\ndesigners, the great flexibility of Lithium-Polymer batteries is a blessing.\nConversely, the new design freedom can also lead to uncertainty. It is\ntherefore advisable to take battery developers such as Jauch Quartz GmbH on\nboard at an early stage for new developments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following six parameters must be defined at an early stage if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/know_how\/guide_to_the_design_of_lithium_polymer_batteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">design-in<\/a> is to be successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) Voltage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The average single cell\nvoltage for lithium polymer cells is 3.6 volts as standard. The switch-off\nvoltage is 3.0 volts and the maximum charging voltage is 4.2 volts. If a higher\nvoltage is required, several cells can be connected in series. A parallel\nconnection of several cells also makes it possible to increase the capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) Currents<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the voltage,\nthe current requirement of the application must also be defined. The average\ncontinuous currents must be specified as well as the maximum pulse currents and\npulse lengths. The inrush currents and their lengths must also be taken into\naccount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Temperature<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In connection with the current\npower load profiles of the application, the temperatures at which they are used\nmust also be taken into consideration. By default, lithium polymer cells are\ndesigned for a temperature range between -20 and 60 degrees Celsius.\nTemperatures between 0 and 45 degrees Celsius should prevail when charging the\ncells. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Special cells are available\nfor use under extreme temperature conditions above or below this range. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Dimensions of the Battery Compartment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the dimensions of\nthe battery compartment must also be defined in advance. It is important to\nremember that lithium polymer cells expand over time. This &#8220;swelling&#8221;\nphenomenon is responsible for the cells to become up to 10% thicker over time.\nAccordingly, the battery compartment should be generously dimensioned. In\naddition, sharp edges or the like in the immediate vicinity of the battery\ncompartment must be avoided at all costs so that the battery is not damaged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5) Capacity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The capacity of a battery\nindicates the amount of electrical charge that a battery can store or release.\nCapacity is determined by voltage, current consumption, temperature and the available\nspace in the battery compartment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6) Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To protect lithium polymer\nbatteries from overcharging, deep discharge or short circuits, they are equipped\nwith individually programmable protection electronics. In order to optimally\nadapt this so-called &#8220;battery management system&#8221; to the respective\napplication, individual switch-off values for the system are defined.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, batteries must\nmeet certain norms and safety standards to ensure that the applications are\napproved. Strict regulations apply here &#8211; understandably &#8211; especially in the\nfield of medical technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on these six parameters,\nJauch&#8217;s battery experts will find the right lithium polymer battery solution\nfor every application. In order to guarantee optimum results, however, contact\nshould be made as early as possible in the design-in phase. Otherwise, the\ndesired battery solution may not be available or feasible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these six parameters, there are many other factors that play a role in the selection of the optimum lithium polymer battery solution.
