Of course, the phenomenon is not\nlimited to the battery in the smartphone \u2013 every rechargeable battery\ninevitably loses storage capacity over time. But what is the reason for this?\nAnd how can the lifetime of a rechargeable battery be determined? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service\nlife of a battery indicates how long the battery can be used in a product\nbefore the tolerable loss of performance falls below a certain threshold. These\nvalues vary depending on the application. Accordingly, it is complex to give an\nexact lifetime for a battery in e.g. years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which parameters influence the service life of a battery?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The service\nlife of a rechargeable battery depends on various factors. This includes all\nsteps from storage to commissioning, as well as discharge and to a large extent\nthe appropriate charging conditions. It is also related to the number of charge\nand discharge cycles. Standardized cycles, which means that the cell is fully charged and fully discharged. The whole takes place at room temperature and the maximum currents according to specification. The decisive factor for the service life in cycles is, therefore, the charge conversion during charging and discharging. If the battery were not fully charged to 100 percent, the achievable number of cycles would end up being higher.   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it should not be concluded from this that the battery should always be recharged immediately, after the smallest discharge. This is also referred to as trickle charge. The conditions of this handling lead to the battery being kept in a state of full charge almost all the time, which eventually leads to performance degradation and cell failure. In addition, there is a risk of extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/en\/what-special-features-are-there-to-consider-when-designing-in-a-lithium-polymer-cell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">swelling<\/a> and cell failure with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/products\/battery_technology\/getPrm\/batteries\/Lithium%20Polymer%20Batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lithium polymer<\/a> cells and prismatic cells. With cylindrical cells, the trickle charge can cause abrupt failure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nthe laboratory conditions under which the service life of rechargeable\nbatteries is determined correspond in very few cases to the conditions of the\nreality of the application. This leads to the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can\nwe do to achieve the longest possible service life? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this\nchapter, we will take a close look at the measures that can be taken by users\nand end customers to treat batteries as gently as possible and to positively\ninfluence their service life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of\nall, the temperatures during loading must be maintained according to\nspecification. This is because excessive charge currents at temperatures below\n15\u00b0C can cause lithium plating on the anode side of some types. This, in turn,\ncan lead to a drop in capacity and, in the worst case, to internal short\ncircuits with a fire hazard. At the same time, too high temperatures should\nalso be avoided. For many cells, charging in the temperature range of 0\u00b0C to\n45\u00b0C is considered optimal, taking into account the currents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The storage\nof the cells or batteries also influences the service life. Storage at room\ntemperature or lower is recommended. However, it is essential to avoid\ntemperature fluctuations, which lead to a reduction in service life. So, if\npossible, the batteries should be stored in a climate-controlled environment to\nhave as little impact as possible on their lifespan. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Lager-I.jpg\" alt=\"Clean and climatized warehouse\" class=\"wp-image-2897\" style=\"width:531px;height:398px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Lager-I.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Lager-I-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Lager-I-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Lager-I-249x187.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Storage under climate-controlled conditions affects the service life of batteries as little as possible<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is\nobvious that the FIFO principle (First-In-First-Out) should be strictly adhered\nto in the warehouse. Cells are ideally checked periodically during charging and\nrecharged if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a further measure to extend the life of a rechargeable battery, a lower charge cut-off voltage is recommended. This is especially true for batteries that operate at higher temperatures. In the case of a standard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/products\/battery_technology\/getPrm\/batteries\/Lithium%20Ion%20Batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lithium-ion<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jauch.com\/en-INT\/products\/battery_technology\/getPrm\/batteries\/Lithium%20Polymer%20Batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lithium-polymer battery<\/a>, in this case the battery is only charged to 4.0 or 4.1 volts instead of up to 4.2 volts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These\n&#8220;handlings&#8221;, i.e. instructions for storage and installation in the\ndevice, should be provided to every user of batteries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can\nthe end customer treat his batteries gently to achieve the longest possible\nservice life?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With regard\nto storage, it is also important for end customers that the battery, or the\ndevice, should not be stored and operated at higher temperatures (e.g. in\ndirect sunlight or under the windshield in intense sunlight). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On the other hand, it has a positive impact on the service life if the end customer only charges his device up to 90 percent (especially when high temperatures prevail).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\"> If possible, batteries should not be charged continuously, e.g. overnight. This keeps the battery in an unfavorable state of full charge and leads to a reduction in service life. It is, therefore, best to charge the devices to at least 50 percent before not using them for a longer period of time. Do not store unloaded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\nfinally: use supplied chargers\/power supplies.
