Developers must therefore be\naware of all factors that can lead to frequency deviations. The sum of all\nworst-case scenarios of these factors must not exceed the limits of the\napplication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Possible causes of frequency deviations of a quartz\nresonance frequency are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Frequency tolerance at 25\u00b0C<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frequency stability over temperature<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-term aging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mismatch of the circuit\u2019s C<sub>L<\/sub><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C<sub>L<\/sub> error due to load capacitor tolerance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The developer must compare the sum of these deviations\nwith his application\u2019s tolerance budget and take any necessary corrective\naction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Long-term aging factor<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term change in the resonant frequency of an\noscillating crystal is called aging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aging processes take place in every component.\nAlthough the quartz crystals are dried in a complex process before final\nadjustment and sealing, and then sealed under inert gas, minute amounts of the\nsolvents in the conductive adhesive and minute amounts of oxygen remain in the\ncomponent, where they react over the long term. This reaction leads to a\npermanent frequency change on the quartz, which is called long-term aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developer must take this frequency change over the\nlifetime of the application into account when calculating the tolerance budget.\nThe usual long-term aging rate for standard quartz is up to +\/-20ppm in the\nfirst ten years in individual cases. This is a saturation process that\nintensifies at higher temperatures and thus takes effect earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pre-aging for improved overall performance<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many applications require high frequency accuracy. For such applications (LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.), severe long-term aging is not acceptable. That is why Jauch has developed special quartz crystals that have been optimized specifically for such applications.
